“For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 31:13 Mean?
David describes his enemies' coordinated assault: slander from many, fear on every side, and a conspiracy to take his life. The three dimensions cover reputation (slander), psychology (fear), and existence (murder plot). The attack is comprehensive — aimed at his name, his peace, and his life.
The phrase "fear was on every side" (magor missavib — terror all around) is the same phrase Jeremiah uses for his own experience (Jeremiah 20:3, 10). The terror doesn't come from one direction. It surrounds. Every side. No safe direction. The fear is geographic — wherever David turns, the threat is there.
"They devised to take away my life" — the slander and the fear are means to an end. The ultimate goal is murder. The reputation attack weakens his support. The pervasive fear isolates him. And the conspiracy uses the weakness and isolation to move in for the kill. The three elements work as a unified strategy.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Are you experiencing a multi-directional attack (reputation + peace + safety) — and does David's description capture it?
- 2.How does 'fear on every side' feel — and does David's response (trust, verse 14) seem possible from inside that fear?
- 3.Where is slander creating the conditions for something worse in your life — and how do you stop the escalation?
- 4.Does 'my times are in thy hand' (verse 15) provide security when every direction offers a threat?
Devotional
Slander on every side. Fear on every side. A plot to end my life. The attack comes from everywhere.
David describes the three-pronged assault that's trying to destroy him: first, slander (destroy the reputation). Second, fear (destroy the peace). Third, conspiracy (destroy the life). Each prong serves the next: the slander weakens his standing. The fear isolates him. And the isolation makes him vulnerable to the kill.
"Fear was on every side" — magor missavib — terror all around. Not from one enemy in one direction. From everywhere. Turn left: fear. Turn right: fear. Look behind: fear. The perimeter is closed. Every direction offers a threat. The fear is as comprehensive as the conspiracy that produces it.
The "slander of many" is the foundation: many are talking. Not one rival with a grudge. Many. The narrative has spread. The lies have taken root in multiple conversations. The slander has momentum. And when enough people repeat the same lie, the lie becomes the accepted story.
The conspiracy — "devised to take away my life" — is the endgame. Everything else serves this: destroy the reputation so no one defends him. Create pervasive fear so he can't think clearly. And then move in for the kill while he's slandered, terrified, and alone.
David's response (verse 14-15): "But I trusted in thee, O LORD... My times are in thy hand." In the middle of slander, fear, and death plots — trust. Not naive denial. Not ignorance of the threat. Trust. With full awareness that every side is dangerous, David places his times in God's hand.
The fear is on every side. But God's hand holds every time. And the hand is bigger than the fear.
