Psalms 34:16

Psalms 34:16
The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 34:16 Mean?

The "face of the LORD" is directed against evildoers — not His back, not His indifference, but His face. This is personal, direct, focused opposition. God doesn't just disapprove of evil — He turns toward it with the intention of dealing with it. His purpose: to "cut off the remembrance of them from the earth." Not just to punish them, but to erase their legacy.

The previous verse (34:15) says God's face is toward the righteous — His ears are open to their cry. The contrast is stark: the same face that comforts the righteous opposes the wicked. God's attention is equally intense in both directions; the difference is what His attention brings.

The phrase "cut off the remembrance" is stronger than physical destruction. It's the erasure of legacy, of memory, of any lasting impact. The wicked will not just die — they will be forgotten. Their influence will vanish as if they never existed. In a culture where being remembered was a primary form of immortality, this is total annihilation.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Does it comfort or disturb you that God actively opposes evil rather than just disapproving of it?
  • 2.What does 'cutting off the remembrance' of the wicked mean in a modern context?
  • 3.How does knowing God's face is 'against' evil affect your trust when you see evil flourishing?
  • 4.Which dimension of God's attention do you need most right now — His face toward you or His face against what opposes you?

Devotional

God's face is toward the righteous. God's face is against the wicked. Same face. Same God. Same intensity of attention. The difference is in what that attention means for you.

This is one of the clearest statements in Scripture about God's active opposition to evil. He's not passively disappointed. He's not mildly displeased. His face is against them — the most personal, direct form of opposition possible. You can ignore someone's words. You can't ignore someone facing you down.

The consequence — cut off their remembrance — is devastating in any era but especially in the ancient world. To be forgotten was to be truly dead. No legacy, no children who remember, no stone with your name, no story told at gatherings. The wicked who seemed so powerful, so permanent, so dominant — their very memory will be erased.

This is comfort for anyone who has watched evil flourish and wondered: does God see this? Does He care? Will anything ever change? David says: God's face is against them. Not just His policies or His principles — His face. The same focused, personal attention He gives to hearing the righteous cry, He gives to opposing the wicked.

Which direction is God's face turned toward your life? Toward you, or against what opposes you? Both are love.
