My Notes
What Does Psalms 71:6 Mean?
The psalmist traces God's involvement in his life back to its earliest possible moment: the womb. "By thee have I been holden up from the womb" — before he took his first breath, before he opened his eyes, God was holding him. "Thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels" — the act of birth itself was God's work.
This theology of prenatal divine involvement echoes Psalm 139 ("thou hast covered me in my mother's womb") and Jeremiah 1:5 ("before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee"). The psalmist's relationship with God didn't begin at conversion or at some moment of spiritual awakening. It began at conception. God was there first.
The conclusion — "my praise shall be continually of thee" — connects origin to response. Because God has held him from the very beginning, praise is the only appropriate posture for every moment after. The continual praise matches the continual holding. You've always held me; I'll always praise You.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it mean to you that God's involvement in your life began before you were aware of it?
- 2.How does knowing God held you from the womb affect your trust in His commitment to you now?
- 3.What would 'continual praise' look like as a response to lifelong holding?
- 4.How far back can you trace God's activity in your life? What's the earliest evidence?
Devotional
God held you before your mother did. He was there in the womb, sustaining your earliest formation. He was there during the birth, guiding you out. Before you knew anything about Him, He knew everything about you.
This is one of the most foundational truths in Scripture: your relationship with God predates your awareness of it. You didn't choose God first — He held you first. Before your first prayer, before your first church service, before your first moment of belief, God was already sustaining you. Your spiritual biography begins much earlier than you think.
The psalmist makes this connection explicit: because you've held me from the womb, my praise will be continual. The duration of God's holding matches the duration of the praise. He's been there since before the beginning; the praise will continue without end. Origin and response mirror each other.
If you're someone who struggles with whether God is really committed to you — whether His attention might wander, whether His grip might loosen — this verse takes the evidence back as far as it can go. He was holding you when you were the size of a grain of rice. He didn't start then; He won't stop now.
Your story with God is longer and older than you know.
