- Verse 9
“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
My Notes
What Does Revelation 12:9 Mean?
Revelation identifies the great dragon with four names: that old serpent (connecting to Genesis 3), the Devil (diabolos — the slanderer), Satan (the adversary), and the one who deceives the whole world. Every name reveals a different dimension of his activity.
He is cast out — expelled from heaven, thrown to the earth with his angels. The expulsion is not gentle. It is violent — a decisive act of divine authority over the most powerful created being opposed to God.
"Which deceiveth the whole world" identifies deception as Satan's primary weapon. Not power alone — deception. He succeeds by lying, distorting, and creating false narratives about God, about you, and about reality.
The verse connects the serpent of Eden to the dragon of Revelation — the same being, spanning the entire biblical narrative from beginning to end. The enemy's story arc is simple: he deceived, he was opposed, and he was cast out.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Which of Satan's four names — serpent, devil, Satan, dragon — best describes how you experience his opposition?
- 2.How does identifying deception as his primary weapon change your strategy for spiritual warfare?
- 3.What lie about God or about yourself are you currently believing that might have this source?
- 4.How does knowing Satan has been 'cast out' change your level of fear about spiritual opposition?
Devotional
That old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan. Four names for one being — and each name tells you something about how he operates.
The serpent — he deceives. The Devil — he slanders. Satan — he opposes. The dragon — he threatens. Deception, slander, opposition, and intimidation. That is his entire toolkit.
Which deceiveth the whole world. His primary weapon is not power. It is lies. If he can get you to believe something false about God — that God is angry, distant, disappointed, or indifferent — he does not need to overpower you. The lie does the work.
He was cast out. Past tense. The dragon who seems so terrifying in the visions of Revelation has already been expelled. His authority has been revoked. He operates on earth, but as a defeated being with a countdown on his activity.
Whatever lies are operating in your life right now — about your worth, about God's character, about your future — they have a source. And that source has been cast out. The deceiver is real, but he is also defeated. And naming the lie is the first step to breaking its power.
