- Verse 10
“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
My Notes
What Does Revelation 20:10 Mean?
The final destiny of the devil is described with absolute finality: cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet already are. The torment is day and night, for ever and ever. The defeat is permanent. The punishment is eternal.
"The devil that deceived them" — the devil is identified by his primary activity: deception. The being who has deceived nations since Eden is finally removed from the equation. The deceiver is cast into the place from which there is no return.
"Where the beast and the false prophet are" — the devil joins the beast and false prophet who were cast in earlier (19:20). The unholy trinity — Satan, the beast, and the false prophet — share the same eternal destination.
"Shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever" — the torment is continuous (day and night), without interruption, and eternal (for ever and ever). The language is the strongest possible expression of permanence.
The verse closes the chapter on evil. The accuser who stood before God (Job 1-2), who tempted Jesus (Matthew 4), who prowled like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8) — cast into the lake of fire. Forever.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does the devil's final destination reveal about the ultimate outcome of the cosmic conflict?
- 2.How does 'for ever and ever' as the duration of punishment match the seriousness of the deception?
- 3.How does knowing the enemy's final chapter change your fear of his current activity?
- 4.What does the unholy trinity sharing the same destination communicate about the fate of all who align with the deceiver?
Devotional
The devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. Cast. Not negotiated with. Not reformed. Not given another chance. Cast — thrown, expelled, permanently removed from the realm of the living.
Where the beast and the false prophet are. The unholy trinity reunited — not in power but in punishment. The three who conspired against God and his people share the same eternal destination. The conspiracy that terrorized the earth ends in a lake of fire.
Shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Day and night — no pause, no relief, no intermission. For ever and ever — the strongest expression of eternity the Greek language can produce. The duration matches the crimes. The permanence matches the rebellion.
This is the end of the devil's story. The being who has been deceiving since Eden, who tempted Jesus in the wilderness, who has accused the saints before God's throne, who has prowled like a lion seeking whom to devour — his story ends here. In fire. In torment. Forever.
The enemy you fear has a final chapter. And the final chapter is not victory. It is the lake of fire. Whatever power the devil exercises now is borrowed time. The expiration date has been set. The destination has been prepared. And the casting is certain.
The one who deceived the nations will deceive no more. The one who tormented the saints will be tormented instead. And the for ever and ever that describes his punishment is the same for ever and ever that describes your life with God. Both are eternal. Both are settled. And both are coming.
