My Notes
What Does Revelation 20:9 Mean?
"And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them." The final rebellion covers the BREADTH of the earth — the armies surround the saints' camp and the beloved city (Jerusalem). The encirclement is TOTAL. The siege is COMPREHENSIVE. And then — fire from God from heaven DEVOURS them. The rebellion that seemed overwhelming is consumed in a moment. The fire that falls is divine, from heaven, and FINAL.
The phrase "went up on the breadth of the earth" (anebēsan epi to platos tēs gēs — they went up upon the breadth/width of the earth) describes a GLOBAL army: the breadth (platos) of the earth means the army covers the ENTIRE SURFACE. The rebellion isn't localized. It spans the planet. The deception that gathered Gog and Magog (verse 8) produced an army as wide as the earth itself.
The "fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them" (katebē pyr ek tou ouranou apo tou theou kai katephagen autous — fire descended from heaven from God and consumed/devoured them) is the FINAL divine intervention: fire — FROM God, FROM heaven — descends and DEVOURS. The devouring (katephagen — ate up, consumed completely) is TOTAL. The army that covered the earth's breadth is consumed by fire from above. The global rebellion meets the heaven-sent fire. The breadth of the army means nothing against the fire from above.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What overwhelming opposition surrounds you — and do you trust the fire from heaven?
- 2.What does fire DEVOURING the earth-breadth army teach about divine response to maximum rebellion?
- 3.How does the saints being surrounded AND then rescued describe the pattern of faith under siege?
- 4.What does one verse ending a planetary rebellion teach about the efficiency of divine judgment?
Devotional
They surrounded the saints. They encircled the beloved city. The army covered the earth's BREADTH. And fire came down from God — from HEAVEN — and DEVOURED them. The final rebellion is the final meal for heaven's fire. The global army meets the divine flame. The encirclement meets the consumption.
The 'breadth of the earth' measures the SCALE of the rebellion: this isn't a local uprising. The army covers the ENTIRE SURFACE of the earth. The deception has been maximally effective. The rebellion is as wide as the planet. And the response — fire from heaven — is proportionally TOTAL. The fire matches the breadth. The consumption matches the encirclement.
The 'compassed the camp of the saints and the beloved city' describes the SIEGE: the saints are SURROUNDED. The beloved city (Jerusalem) is ENCIRCLED. From every direction, the army presses in. The saints are outnumbered by a planetary army. The city is besieged by earth-breadth forces. The situation is HUMANLY impossible.
The 'fire came down from God out of heaven' is the response that makes human impossibility DIVINE certainty: the fire comes FROM God (divine origin), FROM heaven (transcendent source), and it DEVOURS (katephagen — eats up completely, consumes without remainder). The divine fire doesn't fight the army. It EATS it. The consumption is total. The rebellion that seemed unstoppable is stopped in one verse. The army that covered the earth is covered by the fire.
What seemingly overwhelming opposition surrounds you — and do you trust the fire from heaven to handle what your defenses can't?
