- Zechariah
- Chapter 13
- Verse 9
“And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”
My Notes
What Does Zechariah 13:9 Mean?
God describes a process of purification through fire. The third part — a remnant — will be brought through the fire. Not around it. Through it. And the fire will refine them the way silver and gold are refined — burning away impurities until what remains is pure.
"They shall call on my name, and I will hear them" — the refinement restores relationship. The purified remnant calls out and God responds. The fire did not destroy the relationship. It renewed it.
"I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God" — the covenant formula restated. After the fire, the relationship is clearer than ever. The identity is settled. They are his. He is theirs.
The refining metaphor runs throughout Scripture (Malachi 3:3, 1 Peter 1:7). Fire does not destroy precious metal. It reveals it — burning away what does not belong until only the pure substance remains.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Where are you being refined by fire right now — what impurities are rising to the surface?
- 2.How does the silversmith metaphor — refining until he sees his reflection — change your view of suffering?
- 3.What does the restored covenant relationship ('my people... my God') mean after the fire?
- 4.How is the fire revealing the real you rather than destroying you?
Devotional
I will bring the third part through the fire. Not around it. Through. The fire is not optional. But neither is the survival. God brings his people through — refined, not destroyed.
Refine them as silver is refined. The silversmith heats the metal until impurities rise to the surface and can be removed. The process is painful. The result is purity. And the silversmith knows it is finished when he can see his own reflection in the metal.
That is what God is doing in the fire. Heating you until what does not belong rises to the surface. Removing what is false, what is mixed, what dilutes the real you. And he keeps going until he can see himself reflected in you.
They shall call on my name, and I will hear them. The fire produces prayer. The purified heart calls out — not from a position of performance but from a position of desperate dependence. And God hears.
I will say, It is my people. After the fire, the identity is clear. No more ambiguity. No more double-mindedness. They are his and he is theirs. The fire burned away every competing claim.
Are you in the fire right now? It is not destroying you. It is revealing you.
