“Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew , saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.”
My Notes
What Does Zechariah 8:23 Mean?
Zechariah 8:23 paints a stunning picture of the nations seeking Israel — not for political alliance or economic trade, but because of God's manifest presence. "Ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations" — the number ten represents a complete group (a minyan in later Jewish tradition required ten men for communal worship). "All languages" echoes the diversity shattered at Babel and promised to be restored in Zephaniah 3:9.
The physical image is vivid: these men "take hold of the skirt" (kanaph — the corner or hem of a garment) of a Jewish person. Grasping someone's hem was an act of supplication, dependence, and urgency — you grab the garment of someone walking by because you need what they have and you can't get it any other way. Ruth grabbed Boaz's garment on the threshing floor. The woman with the issue of blood grabbed the hem of Jesus' robe. The gesture says: I recognize you have something I desperately need.
Their words are simple and theologically loaded: "We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you." They don't say "we've heard your theology is correct" or "your nation is powerful." They say: God is with you. The attraction isn't intellectual or military — it's the manifest presence of God in the lives of His people. The nations aren't drawn by arguments. They're drawn by something they can see, hear, and sense — that God is actually, tangibly present among these people.
Reflection Questions
- 1.'We have heard that God is with you.' If someone observed your life for a week, would they come to that conclusion? What would they actually see?
- 2.The nations aren't drawn by arguments but by presence. How does this challenge the way you think about sharing your faith?
- 3.Ten men grab the hem of one person — the ratio is overwhelming. Have you ever been drawn to someone because you sensed God's presence in their life? What was it about them?
- 4.This verse describes people from 'all languages' coming together. What barriers — cultural, social, denominational — keep you from experiencing the kind of unity this verse envisions?
Devotional
Ten men from every language in the world grabbing the coat of one Jewish person and saying: take us with you. We've heard God is with you. That's Zechariah's picture of what happens when God's presence is genuinely evident in the lives of His people. The nations don't need to be argued into it. They come running.
The word they use isn't "we've heard your doctrine is sound" or "we've heard your worship is excellent." It's "we've heard that God is with you." That's the thing that draws people — not theological precision, not moral superiority, not cultural relevance. Presence. The tangible, undeniable reality that God is actually there. When that's real, you don't have to advertise. People grab your hem.
This verse is both an encouragement and a mirror. The encouragement: God's presence in your life is the most compelling witness you have. More than your arguments, your programs, or your social media presence. When God is genuinely with someone, other people can tell. The mirror: if no one is grabbing your hem — if no one is looking at your life and saying "I want what you have" — the question isn't about your evangelism strategy. It's about whether God's presence is evident enough in your daily life to be worth grabbing onto.
