Isaiah 56:10

Isaiah 56:10
His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.

My Notes

What Does Isaiah 56:10 Mean?

Isaiah delivers a devastating indictment of Israel's spiritual leaders through the image of watchmen who are blind and dogs who cannot bark. The watchmen — whose entire job is to see danger and warn — are blind. They cannot see what is coming.

"Dumb dogs, they cannot bark" — the prophets and leaders are compared to guard dogs who cannot do their one job: make noise when danger approaches. They are silent when they should be sounding the alarm.

"Sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber" — the watchmen are asleep. Not just blind and dumb but unconscious. While danger approaches, they sleep.

"Greedy dogs which can never have enough" (v.11) — the leaders are not just useless. They are self-serving. They cannot guard the sheep but they can feed themselves. The shepherds who do not protect the flock still consume from it.

The indictment is of leadership failure: blind when they should see, silent when they should warn, asleep when they should watch, greedy when they should serve.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does the image of blind watchmen describe spiritual leadership failure today?
  • 2.What does 'dumb dogs that cannot bark' mean for prophets who stay silent when they should warn?
  • 3.Where is spiritual leadership 'sleeping' when it should be watching?
  • 4.How do leaders who fail to protect still manage to feed themselves from the flock?

Devotional

His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant. The people appointed to see cannot see. The people hired to watch are ignorant. The first line of defense is compromised.

Dumb dogs, they cannot bark. The dogs that should bark when danger approaches are silent. The prophets who should warn are mute. The alarm system is broken.

Sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Not just momentarily distracted. Asleep. And not just asleep — loving sleep. Preferring unconsciousness to the uncomfortable work of watching.

Greedy dogs which can never have enough. They cannot do their job — but they can eat. The leaders who fail to protect the flock still consume from it. The shepherds feed themselves while the sheep are devoured.

Isaiah is describing a total leadership collapse. Blind watchmen. Dumb dogs. Sleeping sentinels. Greedy shepherds. Every metaphor screams the same thing: the people responsible for protection have abandoned their post.

This is a mirror for every person in a position of spiritual responsibility. Are you watching? Are you warning? Are you awake? Or are you blind, silent, asleep, and feeding yourself while the flock wanders into danger?
