What Does John 15:24 Mean?

John 15:24 makes a claim that removes every excuse for unbelief: "If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father."

Jesus draws a direct line between evidence and accountability. The works — erga, His miracles, His signs — were unprecedented. "Which none other man did" — ha oudeis allos epoiēsen. No one in history had done what Jesus did in front of their eyes. The evidence was unique, unrepeatable, and undeniable. If it hadn't been given, their rejection would carry less weight. But it was given. They saw it. And they hated Him anyway.

The word "hated" — memisēkasin — is in the perfect tense: they have hated and continue to hate. The hatred isn't a momentary emotional response. It's a settled, ongoing condition. And the hatred extends: "both me and my Father." To hate Jesus is to hate the Father. There is no category of "I reject Jesus but accept God." The works Jesus did were the Father's works (John 14:10). To see them and hate them is to see God and hate God. The evidence didn't produce faith. It deepened the guilt.

Devotional

Jesus doesn't say the evidence of His identity was subtle. He says it was unprecedented. Works that no one else in history had done — performed publicly, in front of crowds, verified by witnesses, undeniable in their scope. The blind saw. The dead lived. The paralyzed walked. And the response wasn't faith. It was hatred.

That demolishes the idea that unbelief is primarily an intellectual problem. It's not. The evidence was there. It was overwhelming. It was unlike anything any other person had ever produced. And the people who saw it with their own eyes hated Him more, not less. More evidence didn't produce more belief. It produced more accountability.

Jesus is making a theological point about graduated guilt. If He hadn't come, if the works hadn't been performed, the rejection would carry less weight. But He came. He did the works. They saw. And they chose hatred. The sin isn't ignorance now. It's informed rejection. The evidence has removed the excuse.

This applies directly to you. The more you've seen of Jesus — through Scripture, through experience, through the works He's done in your life and in the lives around you — the higher the accountability. You can't unsee what you've seen. Every encounter with the real Jesus is evidence that either draws you closer or deepens your guilt. There's no neutral observation. You've seen the works. What are you doing with what you've seen?
