“Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Corinthians 11:23 Mean?
Paul, pushed by the Corinthians' admiration of false apostles, reluctantly lists his credentials — but his list is entirely different from what they expected. Instead of achievements, he lists sufferings: labours, stripes, imprisonments, deaths.
"In labours more abundant" — Paul out-worked everyone. "In stripes above measure" — he was beaten more severely than any of them. "In prisons more frequent" — his record of incarceration exceeds all others. "In deaths oft" — he faced execution-level threats repeatedly.
The paradox is deliberate: the true apostle's credentials are his scars, not his accomplishments. The false apostles boasted of impressive presentations. Paul boasts of beatings. The real thing does not look like the counterfeit.
The list continues through shipwrecks, perils from every direction, weariness, hunger, thirst, cold, and nakedness (v.24-27). Paul's résumé is a catalog of suffering that would disqualify him by the world's standards — and prove him by the kingdom's.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does Paul's list of sufferings challenge how you evaluate spiritual leaders?
- 2.Why does Paul boast in weakness and suffering rather than accomplishments?
- 3.What does it mean that the true apostle's credentials are scars rather than successes?
- 4.How does this passage reshape your understanding of what faithful ministry looks like?
Devotional
In labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Paul's credentials are his scars.
The Corinthians were impressed by polished speakers with impressive presentations. Paul says: you want credentials? Here are mine. Beatings. Prisons. Shipwrecks. Starvation. Exposure. Near-death experiences. That is what a real apostle looks like.
The world measures ministry by success, growth, and influence. Paul measures it by suffering endured for the sake of the gospel. The metrics are completely inverted.
Are they ministers of Christ? I am more. Not more impressive. More beaten. More imprisoned. More hungry. More cold. More shipwrecked. The true minister of Christ is not the one with the biggest platform. It is the one with the deepest scars.
This is deeply uncomfortable for a culture that equates spiritual authority with visible success. Paul says: look at my body. The stripes, the chains, the shipwreck scars — those are my diploma.
What would your ministry résumé look like if it listed what you suffered rather than what you achieved?
