My Notes
What Does Acts 20:18 Mean?
"And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons." Paul opens his farewell to the Ephesian elders with an appeal to their PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE: YOU KNOW. You've SEEN how I lived among you. From the FIRST DAY. At ALL SEASONS. The appeal isn't to Paul's reputation or his theology. It's to the elders' DIRECT OBSERVATION of his life. The defense is experiential: you watched me. You know.
The phrase "ye know" (hymeis epistasthe — you yourselves know) is the FOUNDATIONAL appeal: Paul doesn't need to PROVE his lifestyle. The elders already KNOW it. The verb 'know' (epistasthe) means know from experience, know from direct observation. The elders WITNESSED Paul's ministry firsthand. The appeal is: you SAW me. You were THERE. My life among you is its own defense.
The "from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons" (apo prōtēs hēmeras aph' hēs epebēn eis tēn Asian, pōs meth' hymōn ton panta chronon egenomēn — from the first day from which I set foot in Asia, how with you the whole/all time I was/became) makes the appeal COMPREHENSIVE: from the FIRST day (the beginning, the very start) through ALL SEASONS (every period, every circumstance). The consistency covers the ENTIRE timeline. Not just the good days. ALL the days. Every season.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Could you say 'you know how I lived' to the people who've watched you — and would the testimony hold?
- 2.What does 'from the first day' teach about consistency beginning at the beginning?
- 3.How does 'at all seasons' — every circumstance, good and bad — define the scope of character testimony?
- 4.What would the people closest to you say they've OBSERVED about your manner of life?
Devotional
YOU KNOW. From the FIRST DAY. At ALL SEASONS. How I lived with you. Paul's farewell opens with the most powerful defense available: the testimony of the people who WATCHED his life. The appeal isn't to theology or achievement. It's to OBSERVED CHARACTER. You know how I was. You saw it. Every day. Every season.
The 'ye know' puts the EVIDENCE in the elders' possession: Paul doesn't need witnesses from outside. The ELDERS ARE the witnesses. Their direct observation of Paul's daily life — his behavior, his consistency, his conduct in every season — is the evidence. The defense rests on what the audience already knows from personal experience. The appeal to 'ye know' is the appeal of a life that was lived in full view.
The 'from the first day' establishes the STARTING POINT of the testimony: not from the good season. From the FIRST DAY. The very beginning. Paul's appeal covers his ENTIRE tenure — from the moment he arrived in Asia to the moment he stands before them now. The consistency isn't selective. It's comprehensive. The testimony spans the entire period.
The 'at all seasons' extends the testimony through EVERY circumstance: not just the victories. Not just the successful preaching. ALL SEASONS — the hardships (verse 19 — tears and trials), the threats (verse 19 — plots of the Jews), the public and the private (verse 20 — publicly and house to house). The manner of life was CONSISTENT across EVERY kind of season. The good times and the hard times produced the same character.
Could you say 'YOU KNOW how I lived' to the people who've watched you at all seasons — and would the testimony hold?
