“And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,”
My Notes
What Does Ephesians 1:22 Mean?
Ephesians 1:22 describes the most comprehensive transfer of authority in cosmic history. God "hath put all things under his feet" — a direct quotation of Psalm 8:6, which originally described humanity's dominion over creation. Paul applies it to the resurrected, ascended Christ: everything — every power, authority, ruler, and name (verse 21) — has been placed beneath Christ's feet. The Greek hupotasso (put under) is a military term for subjecting conquered territory to a commander's authority.
The second half contains a gift: God "gave him to be the head over all things to the church." The Greek edoken (gave) means Christ's headship over the church is a gift — not a seizure of power but a bestowal from the Father. And the preposition "to" (te ekklesia) is crucial: Christ is head over all things for the benefit of the church. He doesn't rule the universe for His own sake. He rules it for yours. The church is the recipient, the beneficiary of Christ's cosmic lordship.
The logic is staggering: the one who has all things under His feet has been given as a gift to the church. The supreme ruler of the cosmos is yours. Not as a distant sovereign but as a head connected to a body. Verse 23 completes the image: the church is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Christ fills the universe, and the church is the vessel of that fullness. The most powerful being in existence has been given to you — not as a boss, but as a head to a body. His authority serves your life.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Christ has all things under His feet — and has been given to the church. How does knowing His cosmic authority is a gift to you change how you relate to Him?
- 2.The head-body metaphor means Christ's authority is exercised through connection, not domination. Where do you experience His lordship as connection rather than control?
- 3.Everything is under His feet — including whatever feels overwhelming in your life. What specific 'power' or obstacle do you need to see as already subjected to Christ?
- 4.God gave the supreme ruler to the church. What does it mean to you that the most powerful being in existence has been assigned to your benefit?
Devotional
Everything is under His feet. Every power, every authority, every name that exists or will ever exist — all of it, beneath Christ. He is the undisputed ruler of the cosmos. And then Paul says something that should stop you cold: God gave this ruler to the church. As a gift.
The one who has everything under His feet has been given to you. Not as a distant king issuing decrees from a throne you'll never see. As a head connected to a body — your body. His authority isn't exercised over you like a tyrant. It's exercised through you like a nervous system. The head directs the body not by domination but by connection. And everything Christ rules in the cosmos, He rules for the benefit of the body He's connected to.
If you've been thinking of Jesus' lordship as something to submit to with gritted teeth — a power over you that you have to endure — this verse reframes everything. His lordship is a gift to you. The God who controls the universe gave that control to the church as a present. The most powerful person in existence has been assigned to your welfare. Whatever you're facing — whatever threat, whatever obstacle, whatever power that feels overwhelming — it's already under His feet. And He has been given to you. The universe's ruler is your head, and you are His body. The authority is total. And it's yours.
