John 16:11

John 16:11
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

My Notes

What Does John 16:11 Mean?

"Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged." Jesus explains one of the three convictions the Holy Spirit will bring: judgment — not against humanity in this context, but against Satan. The "prince of this world" is a title for the devil (also used in John 12:31 and 14:30). Through the cross and resurrection, Satan's rule has been definitively judged — his authority has been broken, his sentence has been pronounced, even if its full execution awaits the end.

The Holy Spirit's conviction concerning judgment is aimed at dismantling the false worldview that evil is winning. When the Spirit convinces someone that the prince of this world has been judged, it strips away the illusion that darkness has ultimate authority. The verdict is already in. The ruler of this age is already condemned.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does knowing Satan is already 'judged' change how you approach spiritual battles?
  • 2.Where in your life does it feel like evil is winning — and how does this verse reframe that feeling?
  • 3.What's the difference between fighting for victory and living from a victory that's already been won?
  • 4.How does the enemy use deception to make you forget that his authority has already been broken?

Devotional

The prince of this world is judged. Past tense. Not "will be judged." Not "is being evaluated." Is judged. The verdict is in. The sentence is pronounced. The ruler who holds this world system in his grip has already been declared guilty and defeated.

This is the conviction the Holy Spirit brings about judgment: not that you're condemned, but that your enemy is. The accuser who whispers that you're worthless, the liar who says you'll never be free, the power behind every pattern of destruction in your life — he's been judged. At the cross, his authority was broken. The resurrection stamped "OVERRULED" on every claim he ever made.

So why does it still feel like he's winning? Because a judged enemy isn't the same as a removed enemy. He's operating on borrowed time with stolen power, and his primary weapon now is deception — making you believe his authority is intact when it's already been revoked. The Holy Spirit's job is to convince you of the truth: the prince of this world is judged. The battle isn't undecided. The outcome is settled.

When you feel overwhelmed by evil — in the world, in your circumstances, in your own patterns — the Spirit reminds you: this isn't an open question. The ruler behind it has already lost. You're not fighting for victory. You're living from it.
