- Verse 12
My Notes
What Does John 16:12 Mean?
"I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now." Jesus acknowledges TWO realities simultaneously: He has MORE to say (the revelation isn't complete) AND the disciples CAN'T HANDLE it yet (their capacity is insufficient). The unrevealed truths exist. The capacity to receive them doesn't. The gap between what Jesus WANTS to say and what the disciples CAN BEAR is the space the Holy Spirit will fill (verse 13).
The phrase "I have yet many things to say" (eti polla echō legein hymin — still many things I have to say to you) means the REVELATION IS INCOMPLETE: three years of teaching, and Jesus STILL has more. The 'many things' (polla) means the unrevealed content is SUBSTANTIAL — not one or two additional points but MANY. The disciples have received enormous teaching. There's STILL MORE. The three years of instruction didn't exhaust the curriculum.
The "but ye cannot bear them now" (all' ou dynasthe bastazein arti — but you are not able to carry/bear [them] now) diagnoses CURRENT INCAPACITY: the word 'bear' (bastazein — to carry, to support the weight of) treats truth as something HEAVY. The truths Jesus holds back are too HEAVY for the disciples to carry. The capacity to bear weight increases over time — and the Spirit's coming (verse 13) will provide the capacity the disciples currently lack.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What truth might God be withholding because you can't bear it yet?
- 2.What does 'many things' still unsaid after THREE YEARS teach about the depth of divine revelation?
- 3.How does truth being too HEAVY to carry (not too complex to understand) describe the nature of revelation?
- 4.What capacity is the Spirit building in you to bear what you currently can't?
Devotional
I have MANY more things to tell you. But you can't BEAR them now. Two truths at once: the revelation isn't finished AND you're not ready for the rest. The gap between what Jesus has to say and what the disciples can carry is the gap the Spirit will fill.
The 'many things' means the CURRICULUM isn't complete: three years of daily teaching. Thousands of conversations. Hundreds of illustrations. And Jesus says: there's STILL MORE. The 'many' isn't two or three additional points. It's MANY — substantial, significant, weighty truths that haven't been delivered. The disciples have received more teaching than any students in history, and the course isn't finished.
The 'cannot bear them now' diagnoses CURRENT incapacity, not PERMANENT inability: the word 'bear' (bastazein) means to carry weight. The truths Jesus holds back are too HEAVY for the disciples at this moment. The inability isn't intelligence — it's CAPACITY. The disciples are strong enough to carry what they've received. They're not strong enough to carry what remains. The 'now' is the key word: you can't bear them NOW. Later — with the Spirit — you will.
The 'now' is the word of TIMING and HOPE: you can't bear it NOW — but the 'now' implies a THEN. The capacity that's insufficient now will become sufficient later. The Spirit of truth (verse 13) will provide the carrying-capacity. What you can't bear as eleven men in an upper room, you'll bear as Spirit-filled apostles who turn the world upside down. The current inability is not the permanent inability.
What truth can't you bear yet — and is God waiting until you're ready to carry it?
