Jude 1:4

Jude 1:4
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

My Notes

What Does Jude 1:4 Mean?

Jude warns about infiltrators: certain men crept in unawares — they entered the community secretly, without detection. Their presence was unnoticed. Their influence was hidden.

"Before of old ordained to this condemnation" — their condemnation was written about long ago. The infiltration was not a surprise to God. The judgment on such people was prophesied before they arrived.

"Turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness" — they took grace and made it permission for immoral living. The gift of freedom became a license for indulgence. The grace was not rejected. It was perverted.

"Denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ" — the denial is not necessarily verbal. It is practical — their lives contradict what they claim to believe. The lasciviousness is the denial. When your behavior contradicts your confession, you are denying the Lord through your lifestyle.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How do false teachers 'creep in unawares' — what makes their infiltration undetectable?
  • 2.What does 'turning grace into lasciviousness' look like in practice?
  • 3.How is practical denial through lifestyle different from intellectual denial of God?
  • 4.What fruit reveals whether someone has perverted grace into license?

Devotional

Certain men crept in unawares. They did not announce themselves as enemies. They crept — quietly, gradually, undetected. By the time anyone noticed, they were already inside the community.

Turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness. Grace became a license. The gift of unmerited favor was twisted into permission for immoral living. We are under grace, not law — so anything goes. That is the perversion Jude describes.

Denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. The denial is not intellectual. It is behavioral. Their lifestyle denies what their lips confess. The turning of grace into lasciviousness IS the denial of the Lord. You deny him not just by saying he is not real, but by living as though his lordship does not apply.

The creeping is the danger. They do not arrive with a sign that says false teacher. They arrive looking like everyone else — but their agenda is to twist grace into permission for what grace was meant to liberate you from.

How do you spot them? By the fruit. Grace that produces lasciviousness rather than holiness is grace that has been turned. Freedom that leads to indulgence rather than service is freedom that has been perverted.

The community must be watchful. The infiltrators are not always obvious. But the fruit — the turning of grace into license — always reveals them eventually.
