Psalms 145:14

Psalms 145:14
The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 145:14 Mean?

"The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down." God's SPECIALIZATION: He upholds the FALLING and raises the BOWED DOWN. The divine attention goes specifically to two categories — people who are FALLING (losing their grip, slipping, going down) and people who are BOWED (crushed, bent, weighed down). God's work targets the DESCENDING and the COMPRESSED. The upholding and the raising are directional — both move UPWARD against the downward pressure.

The phrase "the LORD upholdeth all that fall" (somekh YHWH lekhol hanoophelim — the LORD supports/upholds all the falling ones) uses SAMAKH — to support, to lean upon, to sustain. The verb is used for LAYING HANDS on a sacrifice (Leviticus 1:4) — the pressing-down that sustains. God PRESSES His support against the falling. The upholding is ACTIVE — not catching after the fall but supporting DURING the fall. The 'all' (kol) means NO falling person is excluded from the divine support.

The phrase "raiseth up all those that be bowed down" (vezoqeph lekhol hakkephufim — He straightens all the bent/bowed) uses ZAQAPH — to raise up, to straighten, to make erect. The bowed-down (kapheph — bent, curved, hunched) are STRAIGHTENED by God. The bowing that suffering produced is reversed by divine action. The curving that pain created is corrected by divine lifting. The body that grief bent is straightened by God's hand.

The TWO actions are complementary: UPHOLDING prevents the fall from completing. RAISING reverses the bowing that already happened. The first is PREVENTIVE (catching the falling). The second is RESTORATIVE (straightening the bent). God works at BOTH stages — during the descent AND after the compression.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What falling needs upholding — and what bowing needs raising?
  • 2.What does 'ALL that fall' (no exceptions) teach about the comprehensiveness of divine support?
  • 3.How does UPHOLDING (active pressing-against) differ from catching after the fall?
  • 4.What bowed-down posture in your life is God in the process of STRAIGHTENING?

Devotional

God UPHOLDS the falling. God RAISES the bowed. Two divine specializations: catching those on the way DOWN and straightening those already BENT. The upholding prevents the fall from completing. The raising reverses the compression that already happened. God works at BOTH stages — during the descent and after the collapse.

The 'ALL that fall' is the scope: not some who fall. ALL who fall. No one falls beyond the reach of divine support. No descent is too fast for the upholding hand. No category of falling person is excluded. The 'all' eliminates every exception and every excuse for thinking you're beyond God's support.

The 'ALL those that be bowed down' extends the comprehensiveness: every bent person. Every crushed person. Every person whose suffering has curved their spine and dropped their head. ALL of them — straightened by divine action. The raising is as comprehensive as the bowing. The straightening is as universal as the bending.

The UPHOLDING (samakh — pressing support against) is ACTIVE: God doesn't just watch the falling and feel sympathy. He PRESSES His support against the descent. The verb is PHYSICAL — the same word for laying hands on a sacrifice. The support is CONTACT — God's hand pressing against the direction of the fall, providing counter-force, sustaining against gravity.

What falling in your life needs UPHOLDING — and what bowing down needs RAISING?
