My Notes
What Does Psalms 38:6 Mean?
"I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long." David's PHYSICAL depression described in three progressive stages: TROUBLED (na'aveh — writhing, distorted, twisted), BOWED DOWN GREATLY (shachoti ad me'od — bent low exceedingly), and MOURNING ALL DAY (qoder hillakhti kol hayyom — going about in blackness/mourning all the day). The progression is from internal disturbance to physical collapse to all-day grief. The suffering deepens with each phrase.
The phrase "I am troubled" (na'aveyti — I am twisted/bent/distorted) describes INTERNAL DISTORTION: the inner self is TWISTED — not straight, not aligned, not functioning properly. The trouble isn't external circumstance. It's internal DISORDER. The self is out of shape. The soul is warped by the suffering.
The phrase "bowed down greatly" (shachoti ad me'od — I am bent/bowed exceedingly) makes the distortion PHYSICAL: the body mirrors the soul. The bowing is GREAT — ad me'od, to the uttermost, exceedingly. The bending isn't mild discomfort. It's EXTREME — the body bent so far that straightening seems impossible. The physical posture reflects the emotional state.
The phrase "I go mourning all the day long" (kol hayyom qoder hillakhti — all the day, dark/mourning, I walked) makes the grief CONSTANT and MOBILE: David doesn't mourn in one place. He WALKS in mourning. The grief accompanies him everywhere. The darkness (qoder — black, gloomy, dirty with mourning) covers the entire day. No hour is exempt. No location provides relief. The mourning is the atmosphere in which all movement happens.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What all-day mourning have you carried — and have you been honest about it?
- 2.What does David's depression being CANONICAL teach about Scripture making space for mental health struggles?
- 3.How does the progression from internal distortion to physical collapse to constant grief describe the stages of suffering?
- 4.What would it look like to bring your 'bowed down greatly' honestly into your worship — as David did?
Devotional
TROUBLED — twisted inside. BOWED DOWN GREATLY — bent physically, exceedingly. MOURNING ALL THE DAY LONG — grief that covers every hour, every step, every location. The progression is from internal distortion to physical collapse to constant, mobile, all-encompassing sorrow. The suffering deepens with each phrase.
The 'TROUBLED' (twisted, distorted) describes what depression does INSIDE: the inner self is bent out of shape. The normal alignment is disrupted. The soul is twisted — not functioning as designed, not processing as intended, not experiencing reality as it should. The distortion is the first stage: something is WRONG inside.
The 'BOWED DOWN GREATLY' is the BODY following the SOUL: the physical posture mirrors the internal state. The body bends. The shoulders drop. The back curves. The 'greatly' (ad me'od — to the uttermost) means this isn't mild sadness. It's EXTREME — the body so bent that it can barely function, so bowed that standing straight seems impossible. The physical is the visible expression of the invisible distortion.
The 'ALL THE DAY LONG' is the duration: the mourning isn't seasonal or periodic. It's ALL DAY — morning through night, waking through sleeping, in every location and activity. The grief is the ATMOSPHERE. The sorrow is the ENVIRONMENT. The blackness (qoder) is the color of every hour. There's no break, no relief, no hour without the weight.
David WRITES this — and it's in the BIBLE. The psalmist's depression is CANONICAL. The all-day mourning is SCRIPTURE. The twisted, bowed, blackened day is worthy of inclusion in God's word. The depression is not hidden or ashamed. It's RECORDED.
What all-day mourning — what constant, covering grief — have you carried? And have you been as honest about it as David?
