“Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 17:7 Mean?
David asks God to "shew" — to make visible, to demonstrate — His "marvellous lovingkindness." The Hebrew word for "marvellous" (pala) means to be beyond ordinary, to be extraordinary, to distinguish. David isn't asking for ordinary kindness; he's asking for the kind that astonishes. The kind people can't explain.
The phrase "savest by thy right hand" positions God as a warrior. The right hand is the sword hand, the hand of power and action. God saves not with gentle persuasion but with decisive, powerful intervention. And He saves "them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them." The deliverance is specific: trust-ers rescued from attackers.
The marginal reading offers an alternative: "them which trust in thee from those that rise up against thy right hand." In this reading, the enemies aren't opposing David — they're opposing God Himself. David's enemies are God's enemies. The personal threat becomes a cosmic one.
Reflection Questions
- 1.When have you experienced God's 'marvellous' lovingkindness — the kind that astonished you?
- 2.Do you tend to ask God for minimum rescue or for something that demonstrates His character?
- 3.What would change if you saw your current difficulty as a potential stage for God's extraordinary kindness?
- 4.How does trusting God position you to receive what you couldn't access through self-reliance?
Devotional
David doesn't just ask for help. He asks for marvellous lovingkindness — the kind that stops people in their tracks. The kind that doesn't just solve the problem but astonishes everyone watching. God, don't just rescue me — rescue me in a way that demonstrates something extraordinary about who You are.
There's audacity in this prayer. David isn't asking for minimum viable rescue. He's asking God to show off His character through the deliverance. Make it marvellous. Make it unmistakable. Make it the kind of love people tell stories about.
The right hand imagery is important. David isn't asking for a diplomatic solution. He's asking for God's sword hand — decisive, powerful, unambiguous intervention. Sometimes what you need isn't a gentle nudge but God's right hand clearing the field.
But notice the condition: this prayer is for "them which put their trust in thee." The marvellous lovingkindness is connected to trust. Not because trust earns it, but because trust positions you to receive it. You can't experience God's saving right hand if you're still relying on your own.
What if you prayed this way — not just "God, help me" but "God, show Your marvellous lovingkindness through my situation"? What if your crisis became the stage for something people can't explain?
