Psalms 40:10

Psalms 40:10
I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 40:10 Mean?

David testifies to five things he hasn't done: he hasn't hidden God's righteousness in his heart, hasn't concealed God's faithfulness, salvation, lovingkindness, or truth from the congregation. Each "not" is a declaration of faithfulness in public witness. David didn't keep God's goodness as a private experience—he proclaimed it openly.

The progression from "within my heart" to "the great congregation" traces the movement from internal experience to public declaration. David's faith started inside but didn't stay there. What he experienced privately, he declared publicly. The great congregation—the full assembly of God's people—heard from David's own mouth what God had done.

Five attributes of God are named: righteousness, faithfulness, salvation, lovingkindness, and truth. Together they form a comprehensive picture of God's character. David didn't just share one aspect of God—he declared the full range of his experience. God was right, faithful, saving, kind, and true. And David made sure everyone knew it.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Which of the five attributes—righteousness, faithfulness, salvation, lovingkindness, truth—has been most real to you in this season?
  • 2.Do you tend to keep your faith experience private? What holds you back from sharing what God has done?
  • 3.Who is your 'great congregation'—the community that needs to hear your testimony?
  • 4.What specific thing has God done for you recently that you haven't told anyone about yet?

Devotional

David says: I didn't keep it to myself. Everything God showed me—His righteousness, His faithfulness, His salvation, His lovingkindness, His truth—I declared it. I told the congregation. I didn't hide what God did.

There's a temptation to keep your faith experience private. It's easier. Less vulnerable. Less likely to invite pushback or awkward looks. But David considered the public declaration of God's character to be a responsibility, not an option. What God had done for him was too important to keep quiet.

Notice the five things David declares: righteousness (God is right), faithfulness (God keeps His word), salvation (God rescues), lovingkindness (God is tender), and truth (God is honest). That's not a doctrine lesson—it's a testimony. David is saying: this is what I found God to be. Not in a textbook. In my life. And I'm telling everyone.

Your experience of God—the specific ways He's been faithful to you, the moments He saved you, the kindness you didn't deserve, the truth that set you free—is not just for your journal. There's a "great congregation" of people around you who need to hear it. Not a polished sermon. Just your honest testimony of what God has been to you. Don't hide it in your heart. Some of the people listening are barely holding on, and your words might be the thing that helps them hold on a little longer.
