Psalms 89:35

Psalms 89:35
Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 89:35 Mean?

"Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David." God swears an oath — by his own holiness, the highest standard in existence — that he will keep his promise to David. The oath is unrepeatable ("once") and irrevocable. When God swears by his holiness, he stakes his very nature on the outcome. If the promise fails, God's holiness is compromised. Which means the promise can't fail.

The content of the oath (v. 36): David's line will endure forever. His throne will be as permanent as the sun. The guarantee isn't David's faithfulness (which wavered). It's God's holiness (which can't). The entire Davidic covenant rests on the one foundation that can never crack: who God is.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does it mean that God's promise is backed by his holiness — the thing he cannot compromise?
  • 2.How does the irrevocability of God's oath change how you trust his promises during seasons of apparent failure?
  • 3.Where has a promise from God seemed to fail but was actually being fulfilled in ways you couldn't see?
  • 4.What promise in your life needs to be anchored in God's character rather than in your circumstances?

Devotional

Once. God swore once. By his holiness. And that was enough. Because when God swears by his holiness, the oath is backed by the one thing in the universe that cannot be compromised, cannot diminish, cannot change. He staked his nature on the promise.

I will not lie to David. Five words that carry the weight of divine identity. God doesn't just promise not to break his word. He says: I will not lie. The promise to David isn't just a commitment — it's a test of God's character. If the Davidic covenant fails, God lied. And God cannot lie. Therefore the covenant cannot fail.

This is the strongest possible guarantee available in the universe. Not sworn by heaven and earth (those pass away). Not sworn by angels (they're created beings). Sworn by his holiness — the core attribute that defines everything else about God. His justice flows from his holiness. His love operates within his holiness. His power serves his holiness. To swear by his holiness is to stake everything on the one thing that is most essentially, irreducibly, unshakably God.

The Davidic line did endure — through exile, through centuries of no king, through the silent years — until a baby was born in Bethlehem in David's line who would reign forever. The oath held. Through every circumstance that looked like it had failed, the holiness behind the oath was working. And it delivered.

Whatever promise God has made to you: it's backed by the same holiness. The one thing that cannot lie, cannot fail, cannot be compromised. Once sworn. Forever binding.
