My Notes
What Does Psalms 91:1 Mean?
Psalm 91 opens with one of the most quoted promises of divine protection: he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
The secret place (seter) is a hiding place — a concealed, protected space that only God provides. Dwelling there means making it your home — not visiting occasionally but living permanently in God's protective presence.
The shadow of the Almighty (Shaddai) evokes the image of a mother bird sheltering her young under her wings — an image that appears later in the psalm (v.4). The shadow is not darkness. It is the cool, protective covering of something vast above you.
The two divine names — Most High (Elyon) and Almighty (Shaddai) — emphasize both God's supreme authority and his nurturing power. The protection comes from the highest possible authority and the strongest possible provider.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does 'dwelling' in the secret place look like — how is it different from visiting?
- 2.How does the image of God's shadow as shelter rather than darkness change the metaphor?
- 3.What practices help you live in the awareness of God's presence as your permanent address?
- 4.What specific protection in Psalm 91 do you most need right now?
Devotional
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High. Not visits. Dwelleth. Lives there. Makes a home in the hidden place of God's presence. The protection is not for tourists. It is for residents.
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. The shadow is not darkness — it is shelter. Like the shade of a great tree in scorching heat, or the wings of a bird over her young. The Almighty casts a shadow, and those who dwell in his secret place live under it.
The secret place. Not a physical location. A spiritual posture — the practice of living consciously in God's presence. Aware of him. Anchored in him. Making his presence your permanent address.
The Most High and the Almighty. Two names. Supreme authority and boundless power. The protection you receive in the secret place comes from the highest and the strongest being in existence.
The psalm goes on to describe the protection in extraordinary terms: no plague, no terror, no arrow, no pestilence. Angels assigned. Lions and serpents trampled. The secret place is the most fortified position in the universe.
But you have to dwell there. Not visit. Dwell. Make it home. Live in the awareness of his presence as your default, not your emergency option.
Are you dwelling or visiting?
