“How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 94:4 Mean?
"How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?" The psalmist's complaint is temporal: HOW LONG will the wicked keep talking? How long will they continue their hard speech and their boasting? The frustration isn't just that the wicked speak — it's that they don't stop. The speech goes on and on. The boasting has no endpoint.
The phrase "utter and speak hard things" (yabbiyu yedabberu ataq — they pour forth, they speak arrogance) describes speech that is both voluminous (pouring forth, gushing) and offensive (hard things, arrogant words). The wicked don't just say harmful things. They pour them out in floods. The speech is relentless and aggressive.
The "boast themselves" (yitammeru — they glory, they say great things about themselves) adds self-exaltation to the offensive speech: the wicked don't just attack others with hard words. They elevate themselves with proud ones. The speech is simultaneously others-demeaning and self-exalting. Two functions in one stream of words.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What flood of hard words or boasting surrounds you — and how long have you been enduring it?
- 2.How does the 'pouring forth' imagery describe the relentless nature of toxic speech?
- 3.What does speech that simultaneously attacks others and inflates self reveal about the speaker?
- 4.What would God answering 'how long' look like in your situation?
Devotional
How long? How long will they keep talking? How long will the hard words keep coming and the boasting keep going? The psalmist's frustration isn't just the wickedness — it's the DURATION. It never stops. The speech pours out. The arrogance continues. The boasting goes on and on and there's no sign of it ending.
The 'utter and speak hard things' describes a flood of harmful speech: they don't just say one offensive thing. They POUR FORTH — the Hebrew suggests a gushing, an overflowing, a relentless stream of arrogant, aggressive, damaging words. The speech is voluminous. The harmful words aren't isolated incidents. They're a river.
The 'boast themselves' adds the self-exaltation: while they pour out hard words about others, they simultaneously inflate themselves. The speech does double duty — tearing down others while building up self. Every hard word aimed outward is matched by a boastful word aimed inward. The arrogance attacks and self-promotes in the same breath.
The 'how long' is the prayer that every person surrounded by toxic speech eventually reaches: when does it stop? When does the boasting end? When does the flood of hard words dry up? The psalmist isn't just asking for silence. He's asking for justice — for the God who hears all speech to finally respond to the speech that pours contempt on His people.
What flood of hard words or boasting surrounds you — and how long have you been asking 'how long'?
