Psalms 120:4

Psalms 120:4
Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 120:4 Mean?

"Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper." The PUNISHMENT for the deceitful tongue (verse 2-3 — 'Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?'). The ANSWER to 'what shall be done to the false tongue?' is THIS: sharp arrows and juniper coals. The punishment MATCHES the crime — the tongue that shoots lies receives ARROWS, and the tongue that burns with deceit receives COALS.

The phrase "sharp arrows of the mighty" (chitztzei gibbor shenunim — arrows of a warrior, sharpened) describes PRECISION violence: the arrows are SHARP (sharpened to a point) and MIGHTY (shot by a warrior, a gibbor — a powerful person). The false tongue receives arrows that are both accurately aimed and powerfully delivered. The punishment is SKILLED and STRONG. The arrows hit hard and pierce deep.

The phrase "with coals of juniper" (im gachalei rethamim — with coals/embers of broom-plant) describes LONG-BURNING fire: the broom-plant (rethem/rotem) was known in the ancient world for producing coals that burned EXCEPTIONALLY HOT and EXCEPTIONALLY LONG. Juniper/broom coals don't die quickly. They SMOLDER — holding heat for extended periods, burning steadily without dramatic flame but with persistent, penetrating heat. The punishment isn't a quick flash. It's a SLOW BURN.

The ARROWS and COALS together cover IMMEDIATE and PROLONGED punishment: the arrows are SHARP (immediate piercing). The coals are LONG-BURNING (extended suffering). The false tongue receives both — the sharp strike and the sustained burn. The punishment is instant AND ongoing. The arrow hits NOW. The coal burns LONG.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What immediate (arrows) and sustained (coals) consequences has the deceitful tongue earned?
  • 2.What does juniper coals (burning hot and LONG) teach about the persistence of consequences for lying?
  • 3.How does the punishment MIRRORING the crime (arrows for arrow-tongues, coals for burning-tongues) describe poetic justice?
  • 4.What false tongue in your world is heading toward sharp arrows and slow-burning coals?

Devotional

Sharp ARROWS. Juniper COALS. The punishment for the deceitful tongue is PRECISION and PERSISTENCE — arrows that pierce immediately and coals that burn for HOURS. The false tongue receives both: the sharp impact and the slow burn. The consequence is instantaneous AND sustained.

The ARROWS are the warrior's (gibbor — mighty man's) and they're SHARPENED: this isn't random violence. It's SKILLED — accurately aimed, powerfully shot, precisely sharpened. The tongue that shot LIES receives arrows that are shot with TRUTH. The weapon of the punishment mirrors the weapon of the crime. The arrow answers the tongue.

The JUNIPER COALS are the SLOW BURN: broom-plant embers were legendary in the ancient world for burning HOT and LONG — holding their heat for hours, smoldering persistently, producing sustained heat without dramatic flame. The punishment for the false tongue isn't a flash-fire that's over quickly. It's a COAL — burning deep, lasting long, persistent in its heat. The lying tongue burns SLOWLY.

The MATCHING is the justice: the tongue that SHOT lies (like arrows) receives ARROWS. The tongue that BURNED with deceit receives COALS. The punishment fits the crime in KIND, not just in degree. The weapon of judgment mirrors the weapon of sin. The arrow for the arrow-tongue. The coal for the burning-tongue.

What 'sharp arrows' and 'juniper coals' — what immediate and sustained consequences — has the deceitful tongue in your world earned?
